Guillain Barre

Mez’s Story

“In 2016, I was struck with a severe form of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS).  I was fully paralyzed from the neck downward.  After my stay in Neurology ICU, I was transferred to a Rehab Centre where I stayed for 4 months.  After my discharge from the Rehab Centre, I was moved to their outpatient therapy program.  While I was an outpatient at the Rehab Centre, I kept hearing about Neuro-Ability Physiotherapy and how great the physiotherapists were there.  I was wanting more physiotherapy, so I booked a few sessions and am I glad I did.

In order to recover from GBS, your nerves must regenerate (which is excruciatingly slow) and then comes the process of reactivating your nerves and muscles.  This is where Neuro Ability really helped me.  The Physiotherapists use a form of physiotherapy on me called Bobath.  It is very hands on and is a method used to get the motor signals from the nerve/muscle to the brain.  There would be times that they were able to fire up my nerve/muscles and kaboom…. my nerve would start working.  It was a matter of “waking up” the nerves and then I could move on to building up the muscles.

I continue to work on my recovery and to go to Neuro Ability once or twice a week.  I am continuing to see progress and to get stronger.  I attribute a large part of my recovery to the EXCELLENT team at Neuro-Ability.”
