Sal’s Story

“‘You need to see Libby Swain’... a comment that I heard from three physiotherapists in different settings during my first year after a neurological event. Travel was complicated as my condition was unpredictable and declining when a fourth physiotherapist, an instructor in the programme at UBC, insisted on making the arrangements. In my brain fog and ignorance at the time I had no inkling that the ensuing experience - which continues 7 years later - would break down not only the physical barriers, but remodel my intellectual and emotional outlook in a manner unmatched through my medical life as a subspecialist physician.

From the outset, Libby patiently began educating, supporting and redirecting my mind and a body that I no longer understood. She immediately offered simple reassurance and explanations that I could process at the time - the first practical hope that I’d had after floundering through a year-long series of hospital admissions and investigations. By the second visit her clinical acumen became evident as she had written to my physicians to relate her findings and advocate for respiratory review and support; ventilation was initiated with profound effect, marking the transition to real recovery. The trust evolved; through my post-incident muddle I was slow to grasp the physio “modus operandi”. Observations and comments that initially took weeks for me to understand morphed over the years to the exchange of journal articles - with the same gentle correction of my misinterpretations and preconceptions - as I came to appreciate the basic elements of the field. Libby opened my eyes and attitude to novel approaches, involving other physiotherapists and modalities and reworking the plan, undeterred as obstacles arose or progress stalled. Her commitment to patients is unwavering and clearly the impetus shaping her multi-faceted career.

Throughout this journey I have been privileged to watch Libby’s interaction with her colleagues and her mentorship of young physiotherapists and students. Their respect for her vast clinical and academic experience is evident, yet her unassuming manner and sense of humour encourages physios at any level to approach her with their questions. The answers she provides are targeted to their comprehension and skill and designed to pique their inquisitive nature (and that of the patient!). The enthusiasm and passion for learning that she exudes, along with the sustained idealism in every aspect of her practice and selfless contribution to her profession and society, are inspirational. Libby clearly leads by example, providing the motivation, positivity and strength of character that fosters perseverance. She synthesizes complex problems into achievable goals (theoretically and literally), advancing one’s function, rekindling interests and optimizing enjoyment and participation in life.

The pathway that Libby Swain has forged embodies the values and aspirations that lead bright young people into the primary healthcare professions. It underscores partnership and shared expertise for the mutual advancement of diverse disciplines. The development of a cohesive team and ultimately patient well-being are paramount.

I will be forever grateful.”
