Lois’ Story

“Hello, my name is Lois Donnelly and I am a 68 year old female that lives in the Vancouver area.

In February 2016 I was diagnosed with a neurological disability called Transverse Myelitis. My symptoms came on quickly with my right side becoming paralyzed.

I was treated with very high doses of prednisone for five days and during this period I was also asked to start hospital physical and occupational therapy. After about two weeks I was released from hospital still not being able to walk and in a wheel chair. I continued with hospital therapy for a few months as an out patient and regained the ability to walk with a walker with some mobility in my right hand and arm. At this point the hospital felt I had reach a time where my mobility issues were not expected to improve significantly, so therapy was stopped.

After some research at home we found that therapy and therapists for neurological patients were different than for most others. In further research we discovered that Bobath Therapy seemed to work well on patients like me, so I gave it a try. With the help of Bobath Therapy and Bobath trained therapists, I have now regained the use of my right leg, right arm and hand to point were I am completely independent. Yes I still need a cane to walk distances outside the home but inside I can now do all of my household chores without much help from aids. I can bath, dressed, cook, clean, and even write this note.

I would like to thank Neuro-Ability Rehabilitation Services for helping me regain a considerable amount of my mobility back. A special thanks to Stephanie, my therapist, and to Libby and Cathy the founders of Neuro-Ability for not only monitoring and adjusting my therapy to fit my particular needs but to step in when needed to assist me their years of experience. I am fortunate to have found such qualified people.”
