“The journey may be cloudy, the path unknown and long, but I am not alone as I am guided to waypoints that bring new joys.”

Sal’s Story

“‘You need to see Libby Swain’... a comment that I heard from three physiotherapists in different settings during my first year after a neurological event. Travel was complicated as my condition was unpredictable and declining when a fourth physiotherapist, an instructor in the programme at UBC, insisted on making the arrangements. In my brain fog and ignorance at the time I had no inkling that the ensuing experience - which continues 7 years later - would break down not only the physical barriers, but remodel my intellectual and emotional outlook in a manner unmatched through my medical life as a subspecialist physician.

From the outset, Libby patiently began educating, supporting and redirecting my mind and a body that I no longer understood. She immediately offered simple reassurance and explanations that I could process at the time - the first practical hope that I’d had after floundering through a year-long series of hospital admissions and investigations. By the second visit her clinical acumen became evident as she had written to my physicians to relate her findings and advocate for respiratory review and support; ventilation was initiated with profound effect, marking the transition to real recovery. The trust evolved; through my post-incident muddle I was slow to grasp the physio “modus operandi”. Observations and comments that initially took weeks for me to understand morphed over the years to the exchange of journal articles - with the same gentle correction of my misinterpretations and preconceptions - as I came to appreciate the basic elements of the field. Libby opened my eyes and attitude to novel approaches, involving other physiotherapists and modalities and reworking the plan, undeterred as obstacles arose or progress stalled. Her commitment to patients is unwavering and clearly the impetus shaping her multi-faceted career.

Throughout this journey I have been privileged to watch Libby’s interaction with her colleagues and her mentorship of young physiotherapists and students. Their respect for her vast clinical and academic experience is evident, yet her unassuming manner and sense of humour encourages physios at any level to approach her with their questions. The answers she provides are targeted to their comprehension and skill and designed to pique their inquisitive nature (and that of the patient!). The enthusiasm and passion for learning that she exudes, along with the sustained idealism in every aspect of her practice and selfless contribution to her profession and society, are inspirational. Libby clearly leads by example, providing the motivation, positivity and strength of character that fosters perseverance. She synthesizes complex problems into achievable goals (theoretically and literally), advancing one’s function, rekindling interests and optimizing enjoyment and participation in life.

The pathway that Libby Swain has forged embodies the values and aspirations that lead bright young people into the primary healthcare professions. It underscores partnership and shared expertise for the mutual advancement of diverse disciplines. The development of a cohesive team and ultimately patient well-being are paramount.

I will be forever grateful.”

Deb’s Story

“4 years ago I was involved in a mountain biking accident that resulted in a TBI with Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction (which would cause instability of my heart rate and blood pressure, leading to random incidents of loss of consciousness)  This made my initial treatment team uncomfortable, and therefore they referred me to Neuro-Ability.

Neuro-Ability was exactly what was lacking in my previous treatment, and I am beyond grateful for the privilege of receiving treatment at this clinic.  The Bobath method of treatment has been so beneficial for me, and has worked so amazingly to help improve my functional abilities and decrease my pain that resulted from my TBI.

My physiotherapist, Monique, has been awesome to work with.  She has not shied away from working with me due to the instability of my ANS dysfunction, and works within its limitations.  Monique is not only brilliant at the hands on part of the job, but she is also supportive of you as a whole person, and sees that there is more to you and your recovery than just the physical aspect.  On the tough days, it keeps you moving forward knowing that you have her walking along side you.  One of the many things I appreciate about working with Monique is that she treats you like you are part of the team, working with you, not just on you.  You get to be an active participant in your recovery.  Throughout my rehab journey so far, she has taught me so much about the hows and the whys things don't function properly in my body, and what we are doing and going to do to improve them.  I think it's important as a patient to be fully informed of what going on in our own bodies, and she ensures I have that knowledge.  With every appointment I have seen, and continue to see improvements in my function, which overall has increased my quality of life.

The admin staff, Catalina, goes above any admin staff I have worked with.  She offers me extra support with appointment reminders when I need it.  She also works to ensure that all clients have appointment times that work for their schedule and other limitations, such as when they have available transportation. I appreciate her so much, and she is an important part of my treatment team, without her I would have forgotten to show up to many of my appointment, and even forgotten to remember to book my appointments.  She always on it!”

Leonard’s Story

“I cannot speak highly enough about the care, commitment, experience and knowledge the Neuro-Ability  therapists and staff have demonstrated along my journey to recovery.  I would recommend Neuro-Ability to anyone who is experiencing an MS relapse or attack that changes their ability to engage in their everyday life.  If you want to work with the best look no further!

I suffer from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a degenerative brain disease which affects my physical abilities. Milan has been working with me for more than three years, adjusting exercises as my condition has changed. He has coached me in performing practical skills and movements to facilitate everyday activities such as getting up, sitting down and getting into bed. My condition has now reached the point where I’m usually in a wheelchair, mostly due to a lack of balance – except when Milan comes for our weekly appointment. He gives me the physical support and confidence to actually put one foot in front of the other and walk! I am so grateful for his help and encouragement and would heartily recommend him to anyone who needs support in dealing with physical challenges.”
